Garage door wind-load rating zones
Garage doors are the largest opening in most homes, so building codes set wind-load (and, in hurricane zones, impact) ratings. Most inland regions need a standard rating; coastal and high-wind counties need a reinforced door; and Florida’s HVHZ (Miami-Dade/Broward) requires the strictest impact approval. This is a labeled reference, not an engineering determination — confirm with your local building department. Use it with the wind-load reference tool.
| Zone | Recommended rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Inland | Inland / standard | Standard wind-load rated door; most inland US regions. |
| Coastal | Coastal / high-wind | Reinforced wind-load rated door; coastal and high-wind counties. |
| Hvhz | HVHZ (Miami-Dade/Broward) | High-Velocity Hurricane Zone impact rating; strictest Florida code. |
